CBDT has extended the tax audit report deadline to 21 October 2026 and the ITR deadline for audit cases to 21 November 2026. Here is who benefits and how to use the extra time well.
Good news for businesses whose accounts are audited: the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended two key deadlines for Assessment Year 2026-27 (Financial Year 2025-26).
The new due dates
- Tax audit report – 30 September 2026 – 21 October 2026
- Income tax return (audit cases) – 31 October 2026 – 21 November 2026
The extension was announced through CBDT Circular No. 07/2026, dated 28 September 2026.
Who is covered?
The extension applies to taxpayers whose accounts are required to be audited under the Income-tax Act. In practice, this typically includes:
- Companies, including private limited companies and one person companies (OPCs)
- Limited liability partnerships (LLPs) and partnership firms that require a tax audit
- Proprietors and professionals whose turnover or receipts cross the tax audit limits
It does not extend the deadline for regular individual taxpayers who are not under audit. If your case involves transfer pricing (international or specified domestic transactions), check the separate due date that applies to you.
What should you do now?
- Finish your audit first. The tax audit report must be uploaded by 21 October 2026. Don't leave it to the last day, as the portal tends to slow down near deadlines.
- Reconcile before filing. Match your books with Form 26AS, the Annual Information Statement (AIS) and your GST returns, so the figures in your ITR are consistent.
- Pay any balance tax early. An extension of the filing date does not always mean interest is waived. Paying self-assessment tax as soon as your liability is known keeps interest to a minimum.
- Keep company filings in mind. For companies, annual MCA filings such as AOC-4 and MGT-7 depend on your AGM date, so plan these alongside your ITR.
Why it matters
Missing the ITR due date can mean late fees, interest, and the loss of the right to carry forward certain business losses. A late or missing tax audit report can also attract a penalty. Using the extra three weeks wisely helps you avoid all of these.
