Frequently asked questions

How long does trademark registration take?+
The application is filed in 1–2 working days. Full registration usually takes 12–18 months, depending on examination, objections and any opposition.
Can I use the ™ symbol before registration?+
Yes. You can use ™ as soon as the application is filed. The ® symbol can be used only after the trademark is registered.
What is the government fee?+
₹4,500 per class for individuals, startups and small enterprises (e-filing), and ₹9,000 per class for other applicants.
How long is a trademark valid?+
10 years from the date of application, and it can be renewed every 10 years indefinitely.
What is a trademark class?+
Goods and services are grouped into 45 classes. You need a separate application, and fee, for each class your business operates in.
What happens if my application gets an objection?+
The examiner issues an examination report. We draft and file a reply explaining why your mark should be accepted; a hearing may follow if needed.
Can I register a logo and a brand name together?+
You can, but filing them separately gives broader protection: the wordmark protects the name in any style, and the logo protects the design.
Can an individual register a trademark?+
Yes. Individuals, proprietors, partnerships, LLPs and companies can all apply.
